Paradise for Sale: Florida’s Booms and Busts by Dr. Nick Wynne
Once marketed as the happiest place on earth, Florida experienced a brief and dizzying economic boom in the mid-1920s as promoters, real estate developers and con artists became overnight millionaires by creating luxury seaside resorts, elegant country clubs, and imaginary communities in mosquito-ridden swamps. Dr. Nick Wynne, the former executive director of the Florida Historical Society, will explain how bank failures, new federal income tax laws, and a series of destructive hurricanes turned Florida’s great boom into a bust that lasted until World War II. Free admission. For more information, please call (239) 252-8476.

Free Guided Walks at Clam Pass hosted by the Conservancy of Southwest Florida

Few outside of Naples know about this hidden beach, which may appear to be the private beach of a posh resort. But it’s not — it’s a Collier County park. Clam Pass boasts 35 acres of coastal habitat and preserves that habitat by providing beach access from a three-quarter-mile boardwalk to the sandy beach. It is located west of U.S. 41 on Seagate Drive, about a mile from the Hilton Naples. Take a jog or enjoy a bicycle ride, complimentary for Hilton Naples Hotel guests, to explore the Clam Pass boardwalk. The boardwalk leads through a mangrove tunnel and emerges to a sunny beach perfect for finding shells. At 9:00 am Monday through Saturday, meet a Conservancy of Southwest Florida volunteer guide at the parking lot tram stop to enjoy a free guided tour. See ospreys, crabs and dolphins and several ecological surprises including thousands of Black Skimmers, a bird that feeds by flying with its lower jaw submerged in the water until it senses a fish and clamps shut, and a small number of Razorbills, a penguin-like bird that breeds in the Arctic and has never been seen this far South. The free two hour walk is filled with delights and surprises for people of all ages.

For more information, contact the Conservancy at (239) 262-0304. The free tours are held December 3, 2012 - April 30 2013 at 9:00 am Monday - Saturday.
