A Little About Trey Radel ~ Heis a husband, father, an entrepreneur, and a champion of conservative causes in Southwest Florida. Now, Trey is running to represent and serve you in Congress.
Trey and his wife, FOX 4 Anchor Amy Wegmann Radel, had their baby boy, Jude, in December.
Most recently, Trey hosted Southwest Florida’s premier conservative TV & Radio Talk Show – Daybreak with Trey Radel. While he has had a successful run in the broadcast industry, Trey says his“true test in life” has always come in deciding to put his life on the line as an entrepreneur to start up new businesses, as well as a nonprofit.
In between working as a Reporter & Anchor on WINK News, Radel bought, expanded and eventually sold the Naples Journal. Trey and his wife also started US Forces Fund, a nonprofit dedicated to helping physically injured soldiers. They recently completed an addition on the home of a local soldier, who lost his legs in Afghanistan. Radel is well-traveled and trilingual, fluent in English, Spanish and Italian.
Looking to the future, Radel says, “In 2012, it’s time to put more fiscal conservative, non-career politicians into the House. We will also take back the Senate and White House. Together, let’s get the job done."

Stewart Cink & Bo Van Pelt: Van Pelt is the hot player on this team, which will compete for the first time. Including his win in Malaysia, Van Pelt has six top-10 finishes this year in addition to the eight he accumulated in 2010 and is currently ranked 25th in the world. Cink, winner of the 2009 Open Championship and owner of six career victories, will be making his sixth appearance at the Shootout.

Jason Dufner & Sean O’Hair: This is a rookie team to the Shootout. Both will compete for the first time and bring impressive credentials. O’Hair has won four times, including this year’s Canadian Open. Dufner is enjoying his best year on TOUR, with seven top-10 finishes that include a pair of runner-up finishes in playoffs–one of which occurred at the PGA Championship.

Chad Campbell & Chris DiMarco: Campbell has four career victories and DiMarco three. Although this will be the first time they have played together, both have two top-five finishes in past Shootout appearances with different partners. Another common factor, each has finished second in major championships during their career—DiMarco three times and Campbell once.

Rory Sabbatini & Jhonattan Vegas: Sabbatini is from South Africa and Vegas is from Venezuela, where the entire country celebrated when he became the first ever Venezuelan to not only be a member of the TOUR but to win this year at the Bob Hope Classic. Sabbatini is a veteran player who won for the sixth time this year with his victory at The Honda Classic.

Mark Calcavecchia & Nick Price: Two of the game’s nicest guys and great competitors have a combined 25 appearances in the Shootout. Calcavecchia is a two-time Shootout champion, most recently in 2007 with Woody Austin. Both of these major champions spend most of their time on the Champions Tour these days. Each has earned a victory this year and, combined, they have 24 top-10 finishes on the age 50-and-over circuit.

J.B. Holmes & Kenny Perry: This Kentucky duo has experienced Shootout success together. This will be Perry’s eighth appearance and Holmes’ fourth. Perry is a multiple champion of the Shootout, most recently in 2008. For Holmes, a two-time TOUR winner, this will mark the first time back in competition since undergoing brain surgery in late summer. Perry, a 14-time winner on TOUR, won this fall on the Champions Tour for the first time.

This year, Golf Channel will televise Friday and NBC will broadcast the weekend competition.

Fredrik Jacobson & Greg Norman: These two will be playing together for the first time. Jacobson earned his first career victory earlier this season at the Travelers Championship. He also finished T14 at the U.S. Open and T16 at the Open Championship. Norman, who won in 1998 with Steve Elkington, will be making his 22nd appearance while Jacobson will be making his Shootout debut.

Jerry Kelly & Steve Stricker: This marks the fourth consecutive year the 2009 champions will play together. Kelly and Stricker are both from Madison, Wisc., and were born exactly three months apart (Kelly-Nov. 23, 1966, Stricker-Feb. 23, 1967). They have combined for 14 PGA TOUR victories– Kelly three and Stricker 11, including two this year. Kelly has won two Shootout titles in six appearances. His first came in 2006 with Rod Pampling. Stricker, currently ranked fourth in the world, will compete for the fourth consecutive year.
Keegan Bradley & Brendan Steele: This duo of PGA TOUR rookies combined for three wins this year. Bradley is a two-time winner, including his victory at the PGA Championship. Steele won the Valero Texas Open. Both have famous relatives. Steele’s uncle is an actor who plays “Luke” on General Hospital and Bradley’s aunt is World Golf Hall of Fame member Pat Bradley.
Charles Howell III & Justin Leonard: This Oklahoma State and University of Texas team is together for the first time. Howell III is a two-time winner on TOUR and has enjoyed a consistent year, finishing third twice and among the top 10 on seven occasions. Both have a “go-for-it” attitude. Fowler recently won his first professional event in Asia. Since 2010, when he was named Rookie of the Year, Fowler has been among the top 10 in 11 tournaments and finished second three times. Villegas is a three-time winner on TOUR and was a member of Norman’s President Cup team in 2009.
Anthony Kim & Webb Simpson: Another dynamic young team. This December 7-11, the 23rd Annual Franklin Templeton Shootout returns for the 11th time to Naples Florida. Up to 40,000 spectators will be attending the Shootout golf charity event hosted by Greg Norman. A collection of golf’s most decorated individuals have been paired into two-man teams.

In addition, World No. 5 Steve Stricker leads a group of 12 individuals who have compiled 15 titles this year. Naples Florida is experiencing glorious weather these days! For the past 15 years I've lived here, November & December have always been my favorite times of year. Not only is the weather fantastic, there are so many events and festivals going on ~ this weekend alone there are four awesome festivals in the area (see blogpost from October 24th). Hotel rates are also at off-peak pricing so it makes for a great time of year to get away and experience a beach vacation!

So what is the best way to arrive in Naples?

If you are flying, your best bet is to fly into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). Located 28 miles to the Hilton Naples Florida Hotel, many airlines have expanded the number of direct flights to RSW which has made getting to Naples fairly easy. Then - rent a car. It is a straight easy drive into Naples. Big bonus: Parking at the Hilton Naples is complimentary.

Coming from overseas? RSW has also added some non-stop international flights to Dusseldorf, Germany arnd Aalborg, Denmark. Wanting to visit from Canada? Montreal & Toronto have direct flights into RSW.

From Miami or Ft. Lauderdale airports it’s a 2 hour drive via I-75 (Alligator Alley) to Naples. The Tamiami Trail is a 2-lane National Scenic Byway connecting Miami with Naples and will bring you to the front driveway of the Hilton Naples. This road goes through the Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve ~ it can be a lot longer but the scenery is well worth it if you have patience and are not in a hurry.

A great tool I provide to all our prospective guests is the direct flight list available from Southwest Florida International Airport - it is a great resource arranged by nonstop flights available for each city.

Agave Southwestern Grill is scheduled to open at 6 p.m. Sept 16. Agave will feature authentic Southwestern cuisine and an array of more than 150 tequilas. Executive Chef Thomas Rieman, previously the executive sous chef at Angelina’s, created the menu, which is a fusion of Mexican, Spanish and Native American cuisines.

The signature calling card of Agave will be a broad range of tequilas. Presenting a selection of more than 150 tequilas, some of which are not currently available in the local market, the beverage menu will highlight various bouquets and tastes of each specific brand. The tequilas will be creatively displayed throughout the restaurant accentuated by a 12-foot tequila tower complete with a rolling library ladder. Special tastings will be held at the tequila bar, dining tables or in the tasting room with a relaxing water feature.

The uniquely enclosed bar, which is open daily until midnight, will feature specialty drinks unique to Agave as well as Agave’s own draft beer.

The exhibition kitchen offers guests a view of the wood-burning grill where hot entrees will be prepared. Agave’s menu will also offer a selection for health-conscience diners including salads and four distinct ceviches and items less than 500 calories. All items will be made from scratch.

This is a great deal I came across on Groupon today - if you are in Naples or are coming to Naples this summer, one of the greatest ways to see downtown is on a Segway. I lived in Naples for over 10 years before I encountered my first Segway tour. The tour itself taught me a lot about the downtown area of Naples as well as opened my eyes to many of the wonderful waterfront parks and "mom & pop" stores that were gems nestled off some of the beautiful streets off Fifth Avenue South & Third Street South shopping areas in Naples.

Since my first Segway Tour, I've introduced the tour to quite a few visitors. They are fun
for teens through mature adults. After a brief orientation, visitors will wiz and whir through the notorious areas of Naples, including the illustrious Naples Pier, picturesque Cambier Park, and the Third Street South area.

The weather in Naples Florida is a precious natural resource! The locals love it. The visitors love it. It is without a doubt, the main reason why sun seekers from around the globe are drawn to the beaches in Naples! Naples is located along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico and benefits from the warm tropical breezes from the Gulf. Since we are in the sub-tropics, we do get "rainy days". Luckily, the showers don’t seem to last very long and the bright Florida sun peaks out pretty quickly after a storm! So a ‘rainy day’ doesn’t necessarily mean that it rains the entire day!

As concierge, I am asked: "What is there to do in the rain?" Here are my suggestions for the month of July:

1) We have many museums featuring free admission

Immokalee Pioneer Museum, just off Main St.and Roberts Ave.
Collier County Museum located in the Gov't Complex on Airport-Pulling
Naples Depot Museum located on the corner of Fifth Ave. and 10th St
Museum of the Everglades, located in Everglades City
The von Liebig Art Center

2) Another suggestion would be to visit he Holocast Museum on 4760 Tamiami Trail N.

3) Naples public libraries offer so much more than books.They often have lectures, films, and programs. In fact, July 5,6,19,21 there is "A Place We Call Home" and July 5,7,11,12,13 "My Many Colored World", just to name a few. July 12,13,14 you can see the movie "Cleopatra".

4) Try a matinee performance of "42nd Street" at the Sugden Theatre

5) Paint your own pottery at Earth & Fire or Kilns & Clay

6) There is a "Summer of the Sharks" exhibition and lecture at Rookery Bay. Kids' arts & craft program is free on Fridays.

7) Sit, read, and have a cup of coffee at Barnes & Noble.

8) Shopping in Naples if fun at Tin City where you are bound to uncover unique, fun souvenirs to bring back with you.

9) There is always the obvious...movies however take it to the next level at the Silverspot Theatre in Mercato after enjoying a few of the restaurants and perusing the wonderful shops.

10) My last suggestion is my favorite one. Try a massage, pedicure, and manicure. Followed by Happy Hour.

What is World Oceans Day which takes place on Wednesday, June 8? I recently caught up with Renee Wilson, Coastal Training Specialist at Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, to find out.

World Oceans Day is held worldwide to encourage individuals to think about what the ocean means to them and what it has to offer all of us with hopes of conserving it for present and the future generations.

The world’s ocean:

Generates most of the oxygen we breathe
Helps feed us
Regulates our climate
Cleans the water we drink
Offers us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines
Provides limitless inspiration.

Attendees of the World Oceans Day Celebration being held at Rookery Bay in Naples Florida will enjoy a Touch Tank program at 11 a.m. The "Star" of the show is actually an Orange Conical Sea Star (Echinaster sentus) which is found in coastal waters up to 50 feet throughout the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Also on the agenda is a series of IMAX (not 3-D) ocean films in the afternoon. Sharks more your style & liking? In my last blog, I talked about kid friendly things to do in Naples Florida during the summer.

Then this great offer appeared:
Naples Marina & Excursions is offering 3 camps: Nature Adventure Camp, Kayak Camp, and Fishing Camp. These camps are curriculum-based programs with fun in mind. Your child will have fun while learning about the eco system, boatersafety, fishing fundamaentals, paddle techniques, and so much more. There will be 3 five day sessions twice a day.

Now here is the best part! The Marina just held a fundraiser for children that can't afford the camp, and they raised enough money to send 20 children to either the Adventure Camp or Kayak Camp for one complete session. They need help in getting the word out to families that might qualify for a scholarship. Parameters are set for $30,000 yearly combined household income to be eligible for consideration for a scholarship.
